"To promote the preservation and creative uses of sites within Arlington . which are of historical, architectural, cultural, natural, and national significance; to identify, research and encourage an appreciation of County resources"
  • Supported retention and rehabilitation of Arna Valley Apartments, now demolished · Participated in public planning discussions for the Wilson Blvd park site (6008, 6016, 6022 Wilson Blvd.); supported preservation of one house (6022), Phase III data recovery at 6016, and preservation of the foundation and basement features at 6008, as well as documentation of the park's development under the County's Photodocumentation Program
  • Opposed demolition of the Basil Hall house (1700 N. George Mason Drive)
  • Supported a unified development plan for the John Saegmuller house (5101 Little Falls Road) that would retain the house and set conditions for its preservation · Monitored the planned sale of the Glebe House (4527 17th St., N.)
  • Alerted the County to potential archeological resources at the Olmsted property (2775 N. Quebec St.)
  • Monitored proposed changes to the Buckingham Shopping Center
  • Nominated the Arlington House Woods and Arlington Post Office to Virginia's Most Endangered Places, sponsored by the Preservation Alliance of Virginia

    "To foster civic and financial involvement, independently and in concert with other concerned organizations"

  • Launched plans for a Preservation Dinner in May 2000 to highlight the importance of responsible community design, honor winners of the Arlington Preservation Design Awards, and raise funds for AHA projects
  • Participated in the Arlington Community Sustainability Roundtable
  • Maintained membership in the Preservation Alliance of Virginia, the Northern Virginia Association for History, the Clarendon Alliance, and the Arlington Civic Federation
  • Conducted a membership campaign, resulting in 75 new memberships
  • Conducted a membership renewal campaign

    "To promote an awareness of and sensitivity to these resources through education and activities"

  • Maintained and improved the AHA Web site
  • Published a quarterly newsletter
  • Sponsored a joint program in November with the Arlington Historical Society: "The Defenses of Washington and What's Happening at Fort C.F. Smith," a slide lecture by Wally Owen
  • Planned and conducted a field session, "Saving the Recent Past: Garden Apartments in Arlington," for participants in the National Preservation Conference in October

    "To provide information to local, state and federal governmental agencies on local preservation matters and issues"

  • Testified at the County budget hearing in March in support of increased funding and staff for Arlington's Historic Preservation Program and an interpretive center at Fort C.F. Smith Park
  • Opposed the transfer of land from Arlington House to Arlington National Cemetery that would destroy the forest near Arlington House as well as prehistoric archeological resources; also requested to be included as a consulting party under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act in any land transfer in Arlington County for expansion of the cemetery
  • Monitored plans to expand the Arlington Post Office in Clarendon
  • Opposed placement of the proposed Air Force Memorial on the Iwo Jima/ Netherlands Carillon site
