Ten more Arlington places have been
listed in the National Register in the last few month.
Add that to the eight places listed earlier in 2003,
and Arlington now has 51 historic sites listed in
the National Register
of Historic Places.
The Arlington
County Preservation Office continues to prepare
new National Register nominations for Arlington County's
historic sites. Some of these sites are already locally
designated, others have yet to be recognized. After
being completed by the County staff, these nominations
are forwarded to the Virginia Department of Historic
Resources (VA DHR), where the Board of Historic Resources
and the Virginia State Review Board meet quarterly
to consider nominations to the Virginia Landmarks
Register and the National Register. In December 2003,
the Board held their quarterly meeting in Arlington,
at one of the sites being considered for state and
Federal desingation--the historic Stratford Junior
High School (H.B. Woodlawn). During this meeting the
board approved several Arlington nominations to the
Virginia Landmarks Register, most of which have now
also been listed in the National Register.
The VA DHR website provides links to
the National Register nominations and photos for each
of these recently listed historic sites--based on
the dates that each site was reviewed and approved
by the VA DHR.
